Netanyahu Highlights India as Key Ally with “Strong and Unique” Ties to Israel
Speaking at the Jordan Valley Conference, Netanyahu said India maintains particularly strong support for Israel even as the country faces growing criticism and what he described as attempts at delegitimization in parts of the international community. He contrasted this with India, which he said continues to demonstrate consistent backing for Israel.
His remarks come against the backdrop of heightened global scrutiny of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, which began after the 2023 Hamas attack and have drawn accusations from critics who argue the campaign has gone too far.
Relations between India and Israel were formally established in 1992, although India recognized Israel shortly after its creation in 1950. Leaders in both countries have frequently pointed to long-standing cultural and historical interactions, including early trade links across ancient maritime routes connecting the Mediterranean region with South Asia.
In recent years, the partnership has expanded significantly, particularly in defense and trade. India is now one of Israel’s key trading partners in Asia, with bilateral trade outside defense reaching over $10 billion at its peak in recent years, according to diplomatic data.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously highlighted deepening strategic ties, including cooperation in defense technology and efforts toward a free trade agreement. Reports also indicate substantial arms-related agreements between the two countries in recent years.
Netanyahu also thanked India for its support following the 2023 Hamas attack, referring to it as an important Asian partner and ally.
At the same time, India has occasionally expressed concern over regional escalations involving Israel. Following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran earlier in the year, New Delhi called for restraint and emphasized the importance of protecting civilians while urging an early end to hostilities.
